Too often in life we focus on the “how” or “what”. What am I supposed to be doing or how do I do it are common questions we ask ourselves. Though good and appropriate, these are not the most important questions to be asking. The most important questions are the why questions such as why am I doing what I am doing? When we have a strong “why” the “what” and “how” fall in to place.
Understanding “why” rather than simply “what” or “how” transforms seemingly ordinary and mundane tasks of life in to important and significant jobs. Let me give you a simple example to illustrate this point.
Two men took on the responsibility of doing the laundry for their household. Though the chore was monotonous and often thankless it was something that had to be done. Both men had similar backgrounds and similar life circumstances yet one seemed happy each day doing the laundry while the other was clearly miserable. When asked why they did the laundry in their home their answers were very different. The man who was miserable most of the time responded “how else can we expect to have clean clothes,” while the man who was happy responded, “I do the laundry so that my family will feel good about themselves each day.” One of these gentleman had a firm, powerful “why” while the other did not.
Having a powerful “why” guiding our life gives us purpose and the motivation we need to be successful in all that we do. It provides fortitude and the commitment we need to press forward through the good times and the bad. Our reality is that life will not always be easy, always be fun, or always be enjoyable. In fact our reality is that life will sometimes be hard, repetitive, unforgiving, and undoubtedly will take many unexpected twists and turns. Therefore, without a firm “why” behind all we do, it becomes that much easier to get discouraged, give up, and lose hope.
So what is your “why”? Why do you do what you do each day? Having a clear and powerful “why” in our life will help motivate and inspire us to do great things! Don’t live life without it!!
