Control Your Destiny

“Nothing is more liberating than becoming the author of one’s own destiny.”
Hamel & Prahalad, Competing for the Future

Have you ever thought you could make a difference in the world? Well, you can and a fourteen year old boy proved it. Simply by standing up for what you believe in and being positive, you can.

Mckay Hatch, a fourteen year old boy in Pasadena, California decided to become the author of his own destiny. When his friends around him began cussing more frequently, McKay decided to take matters into his own hands, and he started a no cussing club. Thanks to modern technology, McKay’s message and club have spread across the world in only a few months!

The story of McKay controlling his own life is amazing. First, at fourteen he had the courage to take a hard stand against something the world portrays as acceptable and normal; certainly his friends did not have a problem with it. And second, people around the world are flocking to follow his message and pledge to stop cussing.

What can we learn from McKay? We can learn anything is possible and our potential to positively influence others is huge. If a fourteen year old boy can do it, then why not us!? Each of us has the opportunity to influence the world around us for good. We just need to have the courage, confidence, and determination to do it, like McKay.

We also can learn that thousands of people are interested in changing their lives by breaking bad habits. Often, however, people need motivation, guidance, or help from outside themselves to do it. Refraining from not cussing is not an easy task as it takes discipline and self-control; yet, the No Cussing Club has given people a reason to change for the better. Certainly as we stand up for what we believe in, we will encourage people to change as well. This will impact the world in a positive way, and it will enrich our lives and add to our inner fire.

So, if somebody told you a fourteen-year-old boy could start a worldwide club that would encourage many thousands of people to stop cussing, would you believe it? Amazingly, it happened when a boy decided to control his own destiny. He took a stand; he followed his inner fire, and he is making a difference. So can you!!
